Not every piece of steel arrives right, and not every existing frame matches the as-builts. Field welding is what closes the gap between the drawing and the building.
Platinum performs structural field welding, cutting, reinforcement and in-place modification across Greater Boston, both as part of our own erection scopes and as a called-in trade for other contractors.
What’s included
- Structural field welding of moment and shear connections
- Reinforcement of existing members: cover plates, stiffeners, doublers
- Cutting, burning and coping of existing steel for new penetrations
- Repair of damaged, corroded or improperly fabricated connections
- Welding of embeds, plates, angles, hangers and supports
- Weld inspection coordination with the third-party testing agency

How we approach it
We weld to the procedure. WPS, filler metal, preheat and access are confirmed before the arc strikes, and cold-weather preheat requirements are respected rather than skipped.
Cutting existing steel is a structural decision. Before anything is coped or penetrated we want the engineer's confirmation that the remaining section works.
Hot work in occupied buildings means fire watch, permits and protection. We carry that as part of the scope, not as a surprise.
Typical applications
- Connection corrections during erection
- Retrofit reinforcement of existing frames for new loads
- Rooftop equipment support and dunnage welding
- Repair after impact, fire or corrosion damage
What we need from you to bid it
The more of this you can send, the closer the number is to the final one. Missing items are not a blocker; they just become assumptions we write down.
- Description or photos of the condition and the connection detail
- The engineer's repair or reinforcement detail if one exists
- Access: interior, elevated, confined space, occupied building
- Inspection and testing requirements
- Whether a hot work permit and fire watch are required by the property
Associated scopes
On active projects, this work is commonly coordinated with Structural Repair & Retrofit, Structural Steel Erection, Emergency Shoring & Temporary Support. Packaging connected scopes can reduce handoffs, but every proposal identifies exactly what is included.
