Steel Lintel Installation & Repair

Failed and rusted lintels replaced over windows, doors and masonry openings, with proper flashing coordination.

Rusting lintels are a Boston-wide condition. Steel angles set over brick openings a century ago expand as they corrode, jack the masonry above, and open stair-step cracks in the wall long before anyone looks at the steel.

Platinum replaces and repairs lintels on brick, brownstone and block buildings, working with the mason and the engineer so the opening is supported the entire time.

What’s included

  • Assessment of the lintel condition and the masonry above the opening
  • Needling and temporary support of the masonry above
  • Removal of the failed lintel and corroded bearing steel
  • New galvanized or coated lintel angles and plates sized to the opening
  • Bearing preparation and coordination with the mason for rebuild and repointing
  • Flashing and weep coordination so the new steel does not corrode the same way

How we approach it

We support before we cut. Masonry over an opening does not tolerate an unsupported moment while the old steel comes out.

New steel gets a protective coating and the wall gets flashing detailing, otherwise the replacement rusts on the same schedule as the original.

On historic and landmark facades we work to the approved details, and we sequence with the mason's salvage and rebuild plan.

Typical applications

  • Brownstone and brick row house window and door openings
  • Storefront and retail openings
  • Triple-decker porch and window lintels
  • Commercial masonry facades with widespread corrosion

What we need from you to bid it

The more of this you can send, the closer the number is to the final one. Missing items are not a blocker; they just become assumptions we write down.

  • Photos of each opening and the crack pattern above it
  • Opening widths and the number of lintels
  • Access: interior, exterior, staging or lift required
  • Whether masonry rebuild and repointing is in our scope or the mason's
  • Any historic commission or landmark requirements

Associated scopes

On active projects, this work is commonly coordinated with Structural Repair & Retrofit, Miscellaneous Metals, Welding & Field Modifications. Packaging connected scopes can reduce handoffs, but every proposal identifies exactly what is included.

FAQ

Lintel Installation & Repair questions

+How do I know a lintel has failed?

Look for rust staining at the top of the opening, a stair-step crack running up from the corners, mortar joints opening above the window, or brick that has visibly lifted. Those are jacking symptoms from corroding steel.

+Can a lintel be repaired instead of replaced?

Sometimes, where corrosion is surface level and section loss is minimal. Once the angle has delaminated it has to come out.

+Do you do the masonry work as well?

We coordinate closely with your mason and can carry masonry through a partner where you want a single number. Say which you prefer when you request the bid.
